Baseball Alumni Who’s Who

Donegal Athletics has produced successful athletes in men’s and women’s sports who have gone onto collegiate and professional play. Are you familiar with these baseball greats? 

Bruce Sutter, Baseball Hall of Fame inductee, graduated from Donegal High School in 1970 where he played baseball, football and basketball. Sutter went on to become a Major League Pitcher, signing as a free agent with the Chicago Cubs from 1976 –1980. Sutter was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals and was a part of the 1982 World Series team. He stayed with the Cardinals from 1981-1984. Sutter was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in in 2006 and into the St. Louis Cardinals Hall of Fame in 2014. 

Mike Sarbaugh, a 1985 Donegal High School graduate, has spent his years since high school playing, coaching and managing. He played for the Helena Brewers and the Columbus Clippers in the minors for six years before turning his focus to coaching. In the minors he held positions with the Kinston Indians, the Columbus RedStixx and the Akron AerosSarbaugh was named manager of the Mahoning Valley Scrappers, the Lake County Captains, the Kinston Indians, and the Columbus Clippers at different points in his dynamic baseball career. The Clippers won the 2010 and 2011 Triple-A championships with Sarbaugh as manager. Most recently, Sarbaugh was named the third base/infield coach for the Cleveland Indians and has remained in that position from 2013 to today.  

Darin Gorski ‘06 has been playing professional baseball since 2009 when he was signed to the minor league Brooklyn Cyclones. He's played for a variety of minor league teams, including the Savannah Sand Gnats, St. Lucie Mets, Binghampton Mets, and the Las Vegas 51s.  

Chris Heisey ‘03 has had a notable career in the minor and major leagues. He was drafted by the Cincinatti Reds in the 17th round of the 2006 Major League draft. Since then he has gone on to play for the Minnesota TwinsLos Angeles Dodgers, Toronto Blue Jays, and the Washington Nationals.
